Fashion

Why fashion matters?

Fashion matters.

To the economy, to society and to each of us personally, of course in different proportions.
Faster than anything else, what we wear tells the story of who we are or who we want to be. Fashion is the most immediate and intimate form of self-expression. Personally, I admire people who choose their clothes carefully, who do some research about latest trends, who consider what suits them the best or who, at least, check themselves in the mirror before going out. Not to mention that I do look at people’s outfits a lot, specially when I travel around the world, I’m sometimes looking for inspiration, other times I just want to see how the city looks like through the people’s street style.

Fashion deserves to be taken seriously and celebrated for its beauty, creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. The fashion industry is among the most aspirational and dynamic of all industries. Its best designers, as with all great artists, imagine, initiate and move culture on. The cut or pattern that first appeared on the catwalk soon finds its way onto store shelves and into our wardrobe. Whether or not we like to admit it, what we wear and how we wear it is inevitably influenced by designers’ ideas and creative decisions.
We all follow trends or at least we take what we want out of what the fashions masters dictate in the fashion magazines, tv, catwalk or lately, through the influencers.

The “clothes that wear us”

At heart, fashion is all about the art of self-adornment: the visual presentation of ourselves to the external world.
What we choose to wear reflects how we view the world and how we want the world to view us.
The prehistoric caveman with the latest beads, the post-war woman in Dior’s New Look, the latest fashion blog recording street style as it happens, they are all tied to our very human need to express individuality.
We all have our unique style and that’s where the beauty is, because we are all different, therefore we choose to express ourselves in million different ways. How many times we wear something that we want to be comfy in, like a cotton t-shirt and cotton trousers, just because we are not in a good mood or we don’t feel like dressing up and so on. Style says a lot about how we feel at that time too.

_DSC4239

I love to spend time shopping, reading, going through fashion magazines, Instagram pictures, I take time to prepare my outfits too, most of the times, otherwise when I have no inspiration I just play it safe with basics. However, I’m careful at not crossing limits and spending too much time doing this and getting exhausted only trying to look perfect!
That shouldn’t happen, it’s all supposed to be a funny creative game that will make us happy when we see the final result in the mirror.
And the most important advice I could give is: if you need help ask for it!
You have friends that are more talented than you are, you have an Instagram account or a Pinterest, people who look cool anytime without any effort, people more interested in fashion, or even the stylists that they do this for a living. Call them, check those pictures, ask Google. You have so many options that could help you when you have no ideas or you simply feel less inspired. Just shout for help! 🙂

Fashion has been and always will be a constant part of our existence. Why?
Because FASHION really does MATTER.

Singing the denim blues

JEANS HISTORY

Jeans began life as a utility garment because of the hard-wearing nature of the fabric, yet from their origins as the informal uniform of America’s gold Rush and timber industry, they have evolved into a stylish staple that features on catwalks and in high-end fashion magazines. A good pair of jeans can last a lifetime, their durability matched by a flexibility that means they quickly mould to fit one’s shape. Many of us regard our favorite pair of jeans as a familiar friend associated with key moments in our lives.
Many of us also have multiple pairs of jeans. According to a survey, the average American woman owns 8.3 pairs and the British were to spend some 1.51£ billion on 86 million pairs of jeans!
Jeans can now be bought at every price point, in every colour and in innumerable styles.
They have come a long way from their origins as the working man’s uniform.

DID YOU KNOW?

While jeans could appear to be an ideal example of sustainable fashion, they actually exemplify the darker side of clothing production. Jeans are made from cotton, which needs large amounts of land and even larger amounts of pesticides to grow. Achieving that blue denim rinse requires numerous dyeing processes that consume huge amounts of water. According to Levi’s, over three thousand litres of water will be used during the full product life-cycle of a SINGLE pair of 501 jeans, from the cotton production and manufacturing processes to their regular washing at home.

_MG_1229

_MG_1288

THE UGLY TRUTH

Since the 1980’s, jeans have often been designed to appear pre-worn, a look achieved by sandblasting, which has led to many garment workers contracting the incurable lung disease silicosis.
In Turkey, where the backlash against sandblasting first began, there have been 1200 registered cases of silicosis, though many doctors believe the number to be much higher. In Bangladesh, where there are some thousand garment-making factories, jeans production employs thousands. Employees often work eleven hours a day for as little as 38$ a MONTH– the living wage in Bangladesh is 100$ a month, in conditions where the air is filled with tiny particles of silica.
A number of companies have moved to ban sandblasting, including Levi’s, H&M and C&A. Versace and Gucci have also made a commitment to stop using the process in the manufacturing of jeans. The clothing industry’s reliance on subcontractors, however, makes it difficult to enforce such bans. One way to end the practice of sandblasting jeans would be to create your own wear and tear.

Who else remembers using a pumice stone to soften up a new pair jeans and make them look worn-in? 🙂

I do, when the market was not that accesible to us, I used to do my own jeans that would look worn-in, they were so cool and not once I was trying to accessorize them, cut them, basically restyling so it would look like a new pair without having to buy another one. I do recommend you to do the same! 🙂

Probably you’ll be wondering why after knowing what’s behind the beautiful jeans fashion I am still posting these pictures in a full denim outfit!
Unfortunately, I was not aware of all that information either, until I read it in one of the various fashion books I have bought not long ago, after taking these beautiful pictures in downtown Dubai planning to write a completly different article on it, but I believe little awareness wouldn’t mind anyone.

_MG_1408

_MG_1354

Whoever knows me, they know how in love I am with the denim since I was little and I used to have a proper collection of jeans, when I left Romania I counted around 50 pairs, which have been donated later on, so let’s say I was doing litlle good too.
Yes, I still love jeans in all forms, jackets, skirts, you name it. But what I promise to myself is that I will try to use them as much as possible and restyle from time to time, whenever I get bored instead of buying some other pairs.

Do you know any other interesting facts about jeans or other garments/fabrics? Please, share them with us in the comment section, we’ll be all more than happy to know as much as possible to avoid doing major mistakes with our clothing pieces.

The art of self

“You can search throughout the entire universe for someone who is more deserving of your love and affection than you are yourself, and that person is not to be found anywhere. You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.” Siddhartha Gautama Buddha

What is the most important relationship that you have? You may think is the one with your boyfriend, parents, friends.

Let me tell you it is NOT.

_DSC4113

The most important relationship you should have is the one with yourself.
Self love should be a priority, you must love yourself first before being able to send your love to the world. And how would the others be able to love you if you don’t release this love to yourself before anything?

170712_416

Bold and brilliant

To love yourself is nothing but to accept the good parts and the bad parts, to accept your dark mood as well as the bright one, to accept yourself as you really are! To be able to receive as much as you are willing to give and to always do both!
The art of self-love will tell you to be kind to yourself, to treat everyone the way you would like to be treated and it will teach you every day what your boundaries are, as well as, what your values are  and to be able to honour them each moment.

_DSC4041

You are worth it! You are worth all the love, as long as you give it to you first.
And that should be given to your mind, to your spirit and your body. Never settle for less.

_DSC4100

Say HELLO to the new you.

Recognize your strengths, write down things that the others admire you for, cut out all the negativity from your life, even if that includes cutting out “friends”, do more of what you love, put yourself first, but not in selfish way.

_DSC4137

When you do that, when you start loving yourself, when you feel good in your own body, your own mind, the inner happiness you will achieve and the peace of mind, the confidence will not compare to anything else in the world, trust me.

Each morning we are born again

Embrace those mornings.

7 am. You wake up with no alarm feeling well rested and full of energy. You get up and prepare yourself a big cup of coffee and then you start planning your day, your month or perhaps your life…
Oh, such a great feeling!

IMG_5261

BSP-153

Choose to shine!

I am not a morning bird, I admit it, however I am always trying to set an alarm on my day off too, just to make sure I am not wasting any time, plus isn’t the morning the most efficient part of the day? When all the world is silent, when all humans are sleeping or trying to get out of bed and you are already working on your goals and making clear plans for your future.
Or simply, the fact that this is your time! This is the time that no one will bother you, no one will call you or text you and you can just do whatever you want, read, sing, watch movies, write, cook or climb rooftops like we did. 🙂

IMG_5276

BSP-150

When you start each day with a grateful heart, light illuminates from within…

I love this kind of mornings, even more when it involves little sunshine in my eyes…that warm light that steps in your room. The light that brings in passion, hope and enthusiasm. Such a blessing! But how many we are able to see it?

IMG_5259

BSP-28

Every morning is a new day and another chance of living your life

How many of us we are thankful every day for all we have since the moment we open our eyes? For what we see, what we hear, what we feel…for all of it, we shouldn’t be taking anything for granted. It is a gift given by God and we have to cherish it day by day.

IMG_5263

BSP-15

“When you arise in the morningthink of what a precious privilege it is to be alive -to breatheto thinkto enjoyto love.”

Be thankful for all you have and all you are and start the day with positive thoughts!
Don’t miss to tell yourself how wonderful you are and how nothing will stop you from achieving all those big dreams that seem farther than ever. They are closer than you think. Just take the step towards them!

IMG_5262

BSP-20

Wondering how to have a better day?

  1. Smile, smile, smile!
  2. Slow down, take the time to admire or to appreciate.
  3. Say thank you. We all expect a little thank you, right? Say it!
  4. Give compliments. Lots of them. If you love them, they’ll love them too.
  5. Dress nicely! Oh, I love this.
  6. Wear perfume. You know the consequences, it turns heads, ladies…and gents! 🙂
  7. Listen! Such a good advice. We all have something to say, but we are not all good listeners.
  8. Laugh! It will make your day even better! 🙂IMG_5268

Now, go, set yourself free and fly higher than you ever did.

A ladylike to wear your boyfriend oversized blazer

Look cool, not sloppy.

By now you should be used to the latest trends, that tell you oversized is cool!
The bigger the better. With the risk you might look homeless sometimes, go for it!

170707_415

It’s time to wear anything that is two size bigger, so don’t hesitate to borrow your boyfriend shirts, blazers, jeans, but hey, not the shoes! We don’t want some circus going on, pretty ladies! Haha!
My favorite part is that everything is so comfortable plus you can easily hide all the deserts you had lately. 😌

170707_412

Let me tell you the story, I’m flying to NY, the photo shoot has been already planned for a while, so I’m looking forward to meet my dear Sinziana, who is already having a career as a photographer in the lovely New York, New York.

170707_413

Overpack- it’s why suitcases have wheels now.

Time to pack! Oh, only one suitcase, only 24 hours, that’s already a difficult start!
Late in the evening, all clothes out, trying to mix and match and play games with my clothes! Let me add some of my boyfriend’s, I’m quickly thinking.
Anyway, Dubai is way too hot at the moment to wear blazer, he won’t notice.
Done! His jacket straight away in my suitcase!
By the way, we kind of have the same size, we can borrow each other clothes and this is not the first time, actually he was wearing mine too, shhhh, our secret!

170707_414

170707_411

The masculine meets feminine

What do you do with an oversized blazer though? I don’t want to wear anything under, but I can’t walk in a bra around Manhattan either. Let me add that vintage belt I bought in a second-hand! Oh, did I mention how much I love these shops? Cheap&chic, that’s the etiquette!

170707_407

I want a feminine look though. I’ll take some stilettos! Hum, dead man walking around NY in high heels, that’s definitely something that you need to see, after such a long flight and no sleep! But, hey, we can do anything we want, can’t we? Yes, who cares, Starbucks is my favorite addiction, it always keeps me going, so why would I give up now? Caffeine won’t give up on me without getting this done!

170707_409

170707_410

Oh, let’s go back to fashion! Still one item missing.
Mmm, this floral skirt was trying to get my attention, since it’s been a while I didn’t wear it. Ok, I’ll take you to NY dear, don’t cry!

170707_408

Voila, my look is complete! Time to explore New York. 🙂

Drops of happiness

February showers bring March flowers.

I have not seen anyone loving the rain more, anywhere in the world, than the way they love it in UAE.

snapseed

I mean, let’s be honest, I am from Europe and I know very well how Europeans behave when it starts raining, we get all moody and comfy in our beds and we start complaining about how bad the weather is and then we go to sleep, cause nothing beats the sleep with the music of the rain on.

snapseed

Well, the opposite happens in Dubai and you must experience this! Rain comes with happiness! When the first drops are seen we all jump out of beds and we go out. Go out to feel the touch of the warm rain drops on our bodies, to walk in the rain, to drive in the rain, to dance in the rain, anything, but we don’t stay indoors! We simply don’t! For instance, we’d rather go and take some cool pictures! 🙂

snapseed

Staying fashionable regardless the weather?!

We all know how hard that is, no one feels like making any effort to dress up on a wet weather, but it shouldn’t be that difficult!

snapseed

First, make sure you stay warm at all times and you’ve got the right boots on! How else would you be able to jump around and splash water all over?

No umbrella? Nothing to worry about!

snapseed

Put on a hat, I guarantee it will protect you from the rain as much as it does it from the sun!

There you go! All set, ready to Click, Click, Click, ohhh wait,  Taxiii!!!

snapseed

Now tell me…

When was the last time you fell in love with the rainy weather? Come on, if not the drops of the rain, then what brings out the romantic side in you?

snapseed

Grab his hand and swim in laughter,

Dance together and he’ll be your lover.

Andra

What is your obsession?

” I wanted to examine the single dot that was my own life. One polka dot: a single particle between billion.”

snapseed

I’m thinking for a while now, if I actually have any obsession and most probably not. I don’t even know if that is a good or a bad thing. I believe it depends on the type of obsession or the intensity of it.

snapseed

It might be good if you think about the fact you are not addicted to anyone and anything. But when you turn your dream and your passion into an obsession, I believe you are 100% focused on success. It will bring the success! You will make it! Just because everything revolves around your obsession!

snapseed

That’s what Yayoi Kusama (87 years old!) Japanese artist, did!
Her Dots obsession turned out to be a success and took her work all over the world!

This is when the love is transformed into dots! Nothing makes more sense to her, but dots. She sees dots everywhere. There is no life around without the polka dots.

snapseed

I know, many of you will find it silly, you will say the same as I did, yeah, right, everyone can do it, just some dots hanging from the wall or laying on the ground and here is the art, there you are, a successful artist. But she start working on her project back in the 1990s. It takes perseverance, it takes motivation, it takes strong belief in what you are doing, she was basically breathing dots for 26 years now and today everyone knows about her.

snapseed

I have seen her work currently in Sharjah Art foundation, it might be looking simplistic but it brings happiness! So again, she knew exactly what her purpose was.

snapseed

Here are some of our fun pictures taken on the day, around Kusama’s dots. She makes you breath those dots, I’m telling you!

img_5710

snapseed

Xenia Gazi tasting dots. 🙂

snapseed

snapseed

snapseed

Based on her words I dare to say that we must be living in a colorful polka world.

Therefore I want you all to examine your polka dot. Examine your own life.

Let today be the magical beginning of an enchanted life.

Love,

Andra
